Do Female Dogs get Periods? Heat Alert – What to Do to Comfort them

Has your female dog been sterilised or spayed? If not, she’s most likely bleeding almost every six months.Technically, this isn’t menstruation though it seems like it. The medical name for this bleeding is ‘The Estrus Cycle’, also commonly referred to as ‘heat cycle’. People may also refer to it as ”the dog is in heat”.

A female dog, who has reached puberty, bleeds twice a year. Although most of the dogs hit puberty at six months, it varies according to breed and size. Smaller dogs generally go into heat within the first six months whereas the larger ones may take up to one year or even longer.   

Similarly, the duration of bleeding also varies from case to case. A dog in heat may bleed for 1-3 weeks depending upon various factors. Now, during the cycle, your dog will become both slow and lazy. This is because of the pain and discomfort they have to bear. 

So, here is a quick guide on how to comfort your menstruating dog: 

Keep them cosy

While they are bleeding, dogs become slightly cranky and antsy. It’s best to make them feel comfortable by adding an extra cushion on their bed or putting an extra sheet over their body to regulate their body temperature. Additionally, try giving them their favourite toy(s) to play with. 

Offer lukewarm food

Bleeding is a natural but painful process. As such, they need to be made comfortable. Serve warm/slightly warm or lukewarm food as per your pet’s liking. If possible, ask your vet for safe painkillers too. Some vets also recommend using a hot water bottle to soothe their aches and pains.

Keep spare clothes/beds handy

There are chances that on day 1 or 2, they might have to deal with heavy bleeding. For such days, keep extra bedding handy just in case the bed gets soiled and you need to change it. 

Bathe them twice

Give her a good bath with warm water. It will help soothe her sore and tired muscles.
