Dos & Don’ts While Walking Your Dog

Walking a pet can be exciting and challenging for everyone, especially for first-time dog parents. Like with people, walking has a lot of health and social benefits for your dog. Here are some tips to make walks enjoyable and fun for you and your dog.

1. Teach your dog to stop pulling on the leash

The number one rule is to establish a good walking pace with your four-legged buddy. Taking the lead and teaching them to walk with you will help prevent them from trying to pull on the leash and going off track. It will make them more confident in following your lead and ensure they don’t get distracted.

2. Let your dog sniff and explore

A dog’s sense of smell acts as their primary source of information. So, letting your dog sniff and explore new surroundings while on the walk will help familiarise them with the environment and understand it better.

3. The earlier you start walking your pet, the better

It’s always better to start walking your pet as early as you can. Taking your furry friends on a walk from an early age will not only help with obedience training but also help them become more confident. It will also help your dog cope better with new and unfamiliar situations.

4. Stick to a routine

Walking your dog regularly is a great way to improve their cardiovascular wellbeing, maintain a healthy weight, and strengthen their bones and muscles.

It’s important to establish a routine to walk your dog, especially if you want to potty train them outside the house. Being consistent will help your dog adapt to your routine and day-to-day activities.

5. Essentials you need to carry with you

Being a responsible pet owner is crucial in setting a good example in your community and neighbourhood. It’s not pleasant to find dog poop in front of your home when you step out. So, make sure to carry disposable bags to pick up your dog’s waste.

Having a collapsible dog bowl and water with you is also handy in case your pet gets tired and thirsty.
