How to keep your pets calm during Diwali

Diwali -the festival of lights might be a dazzling spectacle for us, but for our furry friends, it can be a source of anxiety and terror. Fireworks and loud celebrations during Diwali are distressing for pets. If your pet turns into a trembling ball of nerves at the sound of fireworks, you’re not alone.

At AMTM, the day next to Diwali is generally a super busy day because we get infinite calls for rescuing pets who probably are lost because they ran away from home trying to escape the noise and could not find their way back home. They’re often found far away, alone, scared, disoriented and exhausted.

Have you ever wondered why fireworks can be so distressing for pets, especially dogs?

Dogs have heightened senses, and the loud, unpredictable sounds of fireworks overwhelm them. The sudden bursts of light and noise trigger anxiety. They become fearful and display stressed behaviour.

Here are a few tips that might come in handy for soothing their anxiety and making them feel comfortable.

Creating a safe space:

One effective way to ease your pet’s anxiety is to create a safe and secure space for them to retreat to. Choose a quiet room or area where they feel comfortable, and make it cosy with their favourite toys, blankets, and perhaps an item of your clothing for a familiar scent.

Calming music:

Drown out the booming sounds of fireworks by playing calming music on the television or home theatre. This can help mask the startling noises and provide a more soothing auditory environment for your pet.

Anxiety wraps/Thunder shirts:

Consider using anxiety wraps or Thunder shirts, which are designed to apply gentle pressure to your pet’s torso, providing a sense of security. Many pet lovers find these effective in reducing anxiety during fireworks displays.

Consulting a veterinarian:

If your pet’s fear of fireworks is severe, it might be worth consulting with your veterinarian. They can offer professional advice and may recommend anxiety relief medications that could help your furry friend remain calm.

Gradual desensitisation:

Consider a gradual desensitization process. Play recorded firework sounds at a low volume and gradually increase it over time. Pair this with positive reinforcement, like treats or playtime, to create positive associations with the sounds.

Reassure them:

Dogs often look up to their human friends for reassurance. Stay calm and comfort them during fireworks displays, providing gentle pets and soothing words to let your dog know everything is okay.

Helping your dog cope with fireworks anxiety requires patience and understanding. By creating a safe space, utilizing calming techniques, and considering professional advice, you can make the explosive festivities more bearable for your four-legged friend. Remember, a little extra care goes a long way in keeping tails wagging during the festive season!
